What the relationship between all these people is, I have no idea.  I believe this William H. Noland to be the one who married Samantha Baker. Robert C. Noland -- maybe James or Martha Ann were married and brought another 4 year old into the marriage -- or perhaps Robert, since he is listed last, is the son of Stephen or Little Noland and his mother has died and sister-in-law Martha Ann is raising him with William.  (All supposition on my part at this point).  Since we later find James with a wife named Eva, and Eva is supposedly the stepmother to William H. and his sister, Sarah Ellen Nowlin, Martha Ann Unknown Nowlin must have been both their mother.

I have been unable to find William and Samantha Baker Noland/Nowlin/Nowlan on the 1880 censuses.
