Introduction

In 1986, the Faulkner County Historical Society published a book entitled Faulkner County: Its Land and People. Since that time many people have enjoyed reading it and using it as a reference for family history research.

The 433-page FCILP contains a wealth of information about the early beginnings of Faulkner County, its geography, industrial and political development, and of course vivid sketches of its early pioneer families.

In mid-summer of 2002, I became interested in providing an index to FCILP when I renewed my interest in my family’s history. Going through the book, I realized how convenient and helpful an index would be. The results of my efforts have yielded 13,168 names, 2,432 surnames, and an index of 736 people who appear in the photographs throughout the book.

This index is not intended to supplant or be a substitute for actually reading the book, but should be considered a companion to the book. The Faulkner County Historical Society has elected not to republish or reprint the book, but instead is offering a CD of it online at http://www.faulknerhistory.com The CD version can be purchased for $15 and well worth it for anyone researching in Faulkner County.

The methodology for the index was to first gather all the names and then combine the duplicate entries. This was especially difficult. Sometimes a person’s name would appear as “J. C. Johnson” and in another place the full name – “John C. Johnson.” Where duplicates could not be ascertained, I did not combine them. Another difficulty was that a woman’s name might appear as “Mrs. J. C. Johnson” and in other places “Mrs. Mary Johnson,” but still the same person. Again, if the entries were not recognized as a duplicate, the entry was not combined. If a maiden name was given, I have placed it in parentheses. To make searching the book or CD more efficient, I have not attempted to correct any misspelling of names.

An honest attempt has been made to make this index as accurate as possible. If I omitted someone or have otherwise compromised the index, it was done inadvertently and I apologize.

I want to thank my friend and fellow researcher, Glenna Blair Shumate for being so gracious in “loaning” me the book and being without it for so many months. I definitely wore the pages thin.
