After the Louisiana Purchase, land was opened for settlement at very low prices. Thousands of families flocked into the area which included present day Arkansas. Early Missouri and Arkansas maps show the vast amount of land to be settled. Akansas Territory was created 1813 in the Territory of Missouri from territorial New Madrid County ( Territory of Upper Louisiana) See MO maps for 1804, 1812 and 1813 and Arkansas Territory 1819 map)
Poinsett County was created in 1833 with land taken from Greene (formed 1833), Jackson (formed 1828) and St. Francis Counties ( formed 1827) Lawrence ( formed 1818). See AR maps. ( Off site ) Craighead then took part of northern Poinsett County in 1859.
These records below are taken from the BLM website. Following the War of 1812, families came for land based on service in the War of 1812. ( Several Military Warrant Acts granted public land to soldiers instead of pay as an enticement for men to enter the service)
