| 11/29/2000 | VERSIA G. ANDERSON, age 88, of Smithville, OK, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2000, in Idabel.
She was born November 17, 1912, in Old Smithville to the late Wes Moore and the late Rena Sorrels Moore. She was united in marriage to her first husband, the late Earl Garver, and her second husband, the late Rufus Anderson. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.
Survivors include: daughters, Betty Johnston of Smithville, Ok and Dorothy Creager of Oklahoma City, OK; son, Bill Garver of Oklahoma City, OK; sisters, Rene Golden and Alma Caenepeel,, both of Kansas City, MO; 10 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren, and 23 great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and her grandson, Damon Creager.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December2, 2000 at 12 noon at Trinity Baptist Church in Octavia with Brother douglas Maggard and Brother Bill Garver officiating. Burial followed in the Octavia Cemetery under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. Contributed by Carmiel Alred |

| Date Unknown | MRS. VIOLA MAE ARMSTRONG
Mrs. Viola Mae Armstrong, 89, of Watson, Oklahoma, died Saturday afternoon in Wilhelmina Medical Center. She was born August 7, 1891 at Sulphur Rock, Arkansas.
Funeral service for Mrs. Armstrong was conducted Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in the Sulphur Springs Missionary Baptist church with the Rev. Don Vaughn officiating. Interment was in the Watson Cemetery under the direction of Geyer-Quillin Funeral home.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Johnson, Houston Mayabb, Lonnie Huff, Elmer Carter, Pete Johnson, and Claude Smith.
Mrs. Armstrong was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frances Giesler and was married to William Sherman Armstrong on April 24, 1910. Mr. Armstrong preceded her in death on May 3, 1967. Mrs. Armstrong was a housewife, and had been a resident of Watson most of her life. She attended the Pentecostal Church at Watson.
Survivors are two sons, Virgie Lee Armstrong, Mena, and Robert F. Armstrong, Torrance, Calif; six daughters, Lenora Phillips, Smithville, Ruth Welk, Yakima, Wash., Marguerite Edwards, Bucycrus, Ohio, Cleo Plunkett, Watson, Elsie Sullivan, Coleta, Calif., and Eunice Moore, San Pedro, Calif.; one brother, Jake Giesler, Hardy, Arkansas. Mrs. Armstrong had 31 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mrs. Florence Gough and Mrs. Bertha Bryant, and one infant son. Contributed by Carmiel Aldred |
| 8/6/1913 | Sad Death The little seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Barrett, living near Garvin, died last Sunday after a short illness. She was a niece of County Attorney G.M. Barrett of this city, who left Sunday to attend the funeral. The Gazette extends sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives. Contributed by Terri Buster |
| 7/2/1930 | Charles Cleveland Barrett, who resided in the Forest Grove community , seven miles west of Idabel, died Monday morning at the Paris sanitarium following a lingering illness. He was 35 years of age and is survived by his wife and four children, as well as three brothers. Judge G.M. Barrett, well-known attorney of Hugo is one of the brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10"30 a.m. at the Forest Grove cemetery. Rev. Ernest Quick, pastor of the First Baptist church at Hugo, was in charge. Charles Barrett was a very likeable and honorable young man who enjoyed the friendship of a large circle of friends. To the bereaved family we extend our heartfelt sympathy in this sad hour. | 2/21/1917 | Mrs. Ethel Barrett Died Mrs. Ethel Barrett died Saturday night at the home of Mr and Mrs J.F. Barrett, in this city, after being confined to her bed for five weeks. Mrs. Barrett had been in ill health for about two years and was stricken with paralysis three weeks ago. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Garvin by Rev. Robt. Merry, of that city. Mrs. Barrett is survived by one child, father and mother, Mr and Mrs J.H. Morrison, of Woodville, Okla., and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her death. She was 27 years of age and had been a member of the Baptist church about three years and was a good Christian lady. Her husband, John Barrett, died about 15 months ago and was buried at Garvin. He was a brother of Attorney G.M. Barrett of this city. The Gazette joins the many friends of the family in extending sympathy. Contributed by Terri Buster |
| 9/18/1918 | J.F. Barrett Died Last Friday and Was buried at Brownstown, Arkansas, Saturday J.F. Barrett, a former citizen of Idabel, died at the home of his son, Charlie Barrett, last Friday and was buried at his old home at Brownstown. Mr. Barrett was 69 years of age and had been a citizen of McCurtain County for a number of years, moving from Brownstown, Ark., to Forest Hill, near Garvin, where he resided for several years, but later moved to Idabel and lived with his son, Hon. G.M. Barrett, until he moved to Muskogee, since which time he has lived with his son, Charlie Barrett, near Denison School House. Mr. Barrett was a good citizen and had a great many friends in this county who will be greatly grieved to learn of his death. The Gazette extends sympathy to the family in their great sorrow. Leone Bates, 89, of Mena, Ark., died Saturday, Aug. 18, in the Wilhelmina Medical Center in Mena.
Funeral services were held at 2p.m. Aug. 20 in the Union Mission Pentecostal Church in Mena with the Rev. Doyle Reynolds officiating. Burial was in the Smithville Cemetery under the direction of Geyer-Quillin Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bates was a retired teacher who taught for many years in Michigan, Mena, Watson, and Smithville. After retirement she lived in Smithville until 1975 when she moved to Mena.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Bates in 1973. She is survived by three nieces, Helen Jane Simmons of Seattle, Wash., Gwen Fullerton of Hurst, Tex., and Medora Harvey, also of Texas.

| 6/15/1997 | Emma Blake, age 101, of Hurst, Texas, died Sunday June 15, 1997 at the Bishop-Davis Nursing home in Hurst, Texas.
She was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas on July 2 , 1895, to the late Jim and Rachel Blake and was united in marriage to the late General Lee Blake on November , 1913 in Watson, Oklahoma.
Survivors include one daughter, Daisy Long of Colleyville, Texas, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late General Lee Blake, two sons; Floyd "Shorty" Blake, Delmar Blake and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 18, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. in the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. H.C. McCoy officiating.
Pallbearers were Duane Vandergriff, Jerry Chung, and J.D. Frost.
Interment followed in the Watson Cemetery in Watson, Oklahoma under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home in Mena. Contributed by Carmiel Alred |

| Unknown Date | Alfred Bruce, 68, of Watson, Okla., died Sunday morning in the Wilhelmina Medical Center. He was born November 12, 1915, at Wickes.
Funeral service was held at 2 Tuesday afternoon in the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church with Bro. J.C. Aylor and the Rev. A.J. Cole officiating. Interment was in the Cecil Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Geyer-Quillin Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Rue Dunagan, Edwin Towry, C.W. Fairless, Don McCormick, John Hilton, and W. T. Youngblood.
Honorary pallbearer was Glen Porter.
Bruce was the son of tje late Giles Harvey Bruce and Mrs. Alice Rebecca Wilson Bruce. He was a member of the Plunkettville Community church, a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a retired farmer and was united in marriage to Miss Nadine Webb on August 10, 1945, at Mena. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1882.
Survivors are two sons, Henry Lee Bruce , Zafra, Okla., Darrell David Bruce, Hatfield; two daughters, Shirley Ann Towry, Cove, Mrs. Alice L. Pate, Memphis, Tenn.; four brothers, Elva Bruce, Plunkettvilee.., Okla., Henry E. Bruce , Plunkettville, Okla., Theodore Bruce, Ardmore, Okla., Barney Bruce, Arlington, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Lorene Wilson, Pasedena, Calif.; seven grandchildren. Contributed by Carmiel Alred |
