McCurtain Gazette Nov 10, 1928 RAYDEN SEAL DIED AT SHAWNEE MONDAY Was a former citizen of Idabel. Interment was had at Shawnee
Rayden Seal died November 5th at 8pm at his home at 815 North Market St, Shawnee Oklahoma, after an illness of several months. Mr. Seal had resided in Idabel the past three and a half years and had many friends who will be saddened by his death. Mr. Seal was taken ill in August, 1927, and spent much of the past year in hospitals in the hope of regaining his health. All the knowledge of medical science was resorted to without avail. At the age of 25, Mr. Seal obeyed the gospel and lived a consistent Christian life, until the call came for him to leave his earthly tabernacle and go into the "house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." "Come thou blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." The deceased was a native of Tennessee, having been reared near the city of Nashville. He was a kindly, princely man; never was he known to speak ill of his neighbor; always ready to contribute toward the upbuilding of the cause of Christ, an earnest, zealous Christian man, one who feared God and kept his commandments. Surviving him are his wife and two sons, John and Wheeler Seal, who formerly resided in our city. Funeral services were conducted by WA Merrill of Shawnee, and WW Starnes of Idabel, in Shawnee, from the Gaskill Funeral Home, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 and interment was made in Shawnee under auspices of the Masonic Lodge. Friends from Idabel who attended the last rites of Mr Seal were: Mr and Mrs WW Starnes, Mrs Ida Buchanan, Mrs Sweet and Mr HA Fincher. The Gazette joins the many friends of the family in extending its sincere sympathy and condolence.
Note: Raden (name is misspelled) was the husband of Hattie Seal, listed above.

published 1/30/1949 in "The Antlers American" by editor Paul Stewart, who was the brother of Jody Burgett's great grandfather Charles William Stewart: CHARLES WILLIAM STEWART, C.W. Stewart, Pioneer McCurtain Merchant, Is Buried Tuesday at Idabel Funeral services for Charles William Stewart, born at Hagarville, Johnson County, Arkansas, February 22, 1880 (age 68 years, 11 months and 13 days) who died Sunday afternoon January 30th, 1949 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Odis Maddry, of Idabel, were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian church of Idabel. The Rev. R. R. Craig, pastor of the church assisted by Rev. W. S. Harmon pastor of the Church of the Nazarene officiated. Burial was in Denison cemetery at Idabel in the family plot by the side of Mrs. Stewart who preceded him in death, June 27, 1939. Charles William Stewart pioneer Southeast Oklahoma businessman and merchant came from Clarksville, Arkansas with his parents, the late Rev. Charles Jackson Stewart and Mary Ellen Stewart and family in 1894 and located at Poteau, Indian Territory, thence a few years later to Red River County, Choctaw Nation about mid-way between Kullituklo and Harris post offices in what is now known as the Pollard vicinity in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. In 1901, upon the commencement and construction of the present A & C Division of the Frisco Railroad he accepted his first position in the mercantile world as manager of a new General Store for J. R. White and W. A. Coleman at Norwood, a new railroad townsite one mile west of the present day town of Haworth, Oklahoma. A short time after Mr. White, Mr. Coleman, the late W. B. Hinton, C. J. Stewart, C. E. Yancey and others learned that the railroad company would not recognize Norwood as a townsite and would only accept the present Haworth townsite they all moved to Idabel and Mr. White and Mr. Coleman liquidated their store at Norwood. Mr. White entered business in Idabel and Mr. Stewart accept a position with him there and worked for him until 1905 at which time he entered business in his own right at Spencerville, Oklahoma and operated it until 1910 when he sold it and moved to Haworth and established a new general mercantile business which he operated as a partnership with his brother Paul Stewart and later consolidating and incorporating with the D. C. Whiteman & Sons, Inc. changing the name to Haworth Mercantile Company until 1920 when he severed his connection a short time thereafter. Mr. Stewart again opened up a new store at Pleasant Hill and operated it until about five years ago when he retired due to ill health. From 1915 to 1921 Mr. Stewart served McCurtain County as County Commissioner of District No. 2, and he will be remembered by those who knew him during those four years as an excellent public official. He familiarized himself with the laws and duties of his office and made it a part of his duties to see that no citizen or property owner was discriminated against in fixing the taxable value of their properties. Public opinion was not a part of his life. After he had made a thorough study of any public issue he was ready to make his own decision regardless and in most all cases his judgment was right. He was a strong character, no burning issue was every too hot for Charles Stewart to take a position upon. He was generous with his opposition in victory and never drooped his head in defeat. Above all he was loved and respected by his entire family and many a time he has extended a helping hand when the obligation was not his under the rules of society. He'll be missed not only by his brothers and sisters and children and their off-spring but by many a friend. Survivors include six daughters and a nephew he raised. Mrs. Grover Matthews, Mrs. Gordon Kilgore, Mrs. S. E. Nelson, Mrs. Odis Maddry, and Mrs. H. B. Blake all of Idabel, and Mrs. Edna White of Perry, and Charley W. Hinton a nephew of Antlers, Oklahoma; two brothers, Paul Stewart of Antlers, James Benjamin Stewart of Rt. 2 Prosser, Wash.; and three sisters Mrs. Sallie Covey of Poteau, Mrs. Nellie Nichols of Hugo and Mrs. Lucy Dickerson of Auburn, Wash. and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Due to the recent inclement weather with public communication installations being grounded and restricted many relatives and friends could not be notified of his passing. Contributed by Jody Burgett
